What are RSS Feeds?
RSS, Really Simple Syndication, is an XML-based format for content distribution. RSS feeds were created to share things like headlines, links, and story excerpts. Think of it as an easier alternative to email. A RSS feed is a regularly updated summary of web content, along with links to full versions of that content. When you subscribe to a given website's feed by using a feed reader, you'll receive a summary of new content from that website.
How to use RSS?
There are two main ways to take advantage of these feeds:
- Your web browser may be equipped to subscribe to RSS news feeds with built in auto-detect extensions that will detect any webpages that carry RSS feeds (ie. Firefox, Opera, etc).
- More tech savvy surfers may want to use special RSS aggregators - kind of like mini-browsers - to speedily flip through the latest news and links from dozens of sites. There are plenty of these RSS aggregator programs out there, but here are some great ones to get you started:
